Here's one other little tip (learned the hard way) since you're going the passive-preamp route.
When you solder the wires to the RCA jacks, use a cheapie set of male RCA plugs (preferably with metal bodies) as heatsinks. Just plug 'em in to the female RCA jacks normally. Not only will the extra metal help keep the plastic insulation inside the jack from melting, but the male plug will 'brace' the parts inside the female RCA jack so that they don't shift while you're soldering, even if the plastic should soften a little.
