Your clarification makes sense. The key issue would be to get a schematic of the unit to see which chips are used for the decoder and the digital filter/DAC. Even if the S/PDIF signal is not used, it often is available on a pin of the decoder and/or digital filter. If so, one can just buffer it and use it.
