Yes. Though, I don't think it's the case that steel is nessissarily better than wood, but a strong, stiff, stand is better than a weaker one. Since steel is a lot stronger than wood, a steel stand has a huge advantage. Though, It's possible to make very good stands from wood, if one knows what they are doing. A good hard wood, assembled with strong joints, and designed in a geometrically strong way should be great.My favorite stands are the ones made from hollow steel tubing (either round or square) that are extensivley braced, etc. The bracing makes the stand stiffer and stronger. Also, if the material is hollow, you can fill the stands with sand in order to increase their mass and also dampen vibration a little.
