Filling stands

210.50.56.243

I tried filling my old stands for my previous speakers with both sand and with lead shot. With both I got an exaggerated mid to upper bass that sounds a bit like what you're describing. It was less with sand due to the lower mass involved and that agrees with your finding that the problem is reduced with less sand in the stands.

What I eventually tried and liked was to use the polyester batting used for quilting - buy it at a craft or quilting supply store. If the opening into the shaft of the stand is large enough, you can cut a piece to length and roll it up and then stuff it down the shaft. If the opening is too narrow for that (all I had was a filling opening about twice the size of the screw hole to screw the top plate on) then cut the batting into thin strips about 1" wide, squash it up and poke it in with a chopstick. It takes a while to get enough in but eventually you get there. As long as the batting is compressed enough to provide some pressure against the shaft walls it will damp the wall vibrations a bit and prevent internal resonances. I found my bass became tighter without any of the exaggerations produced by mass loading with sand or lead.

As far as attaching the speakers to the stands goes, Blu-tack is good and relatively cheap. Use smaller amounts than recommended below - round about pea-size balls is better than marble size. You can use virtually anything that can be placed below a component and the sound can vary noticeably. I've tried a number of different things and currently prefer Tiptoe cones with my Dyn Contour 1.3 SEs. I haven't tried any of the more exotic cones like Black Diamond. Cones tend to couple and you may prefer something soft like Vibrapods or one of the other soft pucks given that you have a suspended floor. I found Vibrapods reasonable in my old house which had a suspended floor but I still preferred the Tiptoes in the end. Just be aware that Vibrapods do mark wooden finishes so put s coaster of some sort between the pod and the speaker if you try them.
