Not to scare you off or anything, but I've got an EE degree and some of this stuff is still over my head. You really have to have both the theoretical/mathematical background *and* time spent learning the specialty area you are interested in. There is just way too much breadth in EE to know everything even after a four-year degree.Even with my degree I still get lost in some of these esoteric designs and I have virtually no experience with power supply design other than the basics, for example. So, on the good side, you can pick up a specialty and do pretty well if you have the requisite background without knowing all there is to know about every branch of electronics. I would seriously suggest you take one or two introductory EE courses though if you really want to know what the heck is going on when someone talks about "input impedance" or the like.
