I have the Sowter 8347 installed in my Tube-DAC X-9 test bed DAC featured at:
www.galstar.com/~ntracy/ACG/RnD/RandD.htm
As was pointed out later in this thread the 8347 is intended to be used
with a R to ground I/V converter. The resistor must be low in value
to keep the DAC chips happy, thus the 1:18 step-up ratio. My X-9 DAC
uses 4 paralleled PCM1702 DACs per channel so I can get away with a I/V
resistor of only 5 ohms. The sound is extremely sweet and refined. Highly recommended. I visited
the SJS web site today and the 8347 data has disappeared. Must check
with Simon to see if it still available. Alternatives include the AN part
which I have no experience with. I have used Jensen 1:1 input transformers
and while obviously lacking the gain (which is a good or bad thing depending
on you analog stage) they also sounded very nice. Jensen’s MC input
transformers also look to be good candidates for this application.
