Re: Zobel networks

Thanks for the info Jon, but we have discussed this before and I was not convinced that the differences could be adequately explained by damping based on my listening experiences. I am simply urging people to give it a listen and make their own decision instead of accepting what they are told is the best way to do something.

Speakers did not generally use Zobel networks prior to the 1980s and designers integrated the voice coil inductance with the crossover inductance and made very good sounding speakers. I think we have lost a little of the artistry that used to be part of speaker design and in many cases I find that the sound has lost a little of the magic the better designs used to provide. Part of this is I believe a result of over-correcting frequency response and over-damping everything in sight until there is no life left in the sound. It often leads to speakers that measure extremely well but are uninvolving.

I don't believe that driver 'problems' should be corrected with capacitors and resistors that have totally different sonic properties than the part they are 'fixing'.
