no dissapointment, I just figured the "cheers" was a dead give away! Anyway here's some info for you:AI - Yes, just plug your favorite source into the tape in and use the tape selector switch to listen to it. It is a BIG improvment! Are you still using the Sovteks? Hmmm, you will find it interesting to experiment with some NOS.
2004 mk 2 - A couple of tweaks that are real nice improvments:
1) replace the monster cable binding posts. You can't beat the Cardas, but for 1/2 the price the Edison is a contender. It will knock you socks off! Figure on about 1 hour to do the job, soldering the Zoebel on is the hard part.
2) Zoebel network - they have a 0.1uf cap in series with a 4 ohm resistor across each of the speaker outputs. I really liked (against all logic - who would think it would make a big difference?) upgrading the caps. I used Teflons, probably a little overkill but I had a bunch.
3) They've got a 1k Ohm roderstien resistor in series with the inputs! Replace it with an S102K Vishay for a real big improvment! (this probably ties with the binding posts for improvement)
4) I tried bypass caps (10uf Relcap PPFX) across each of the power supply caps. Well it made the sound a little brighter and more open, but it would distort much earlier at higher volumes. Probably not worth it in retrospect.
5) FYI - the 2004 and 4004 are nearly identical in layout. the 4004 just has 2x as many output transistors.
6) Oh yeah - do you still have wire wound resistors (brown ones) as emmiter resistors in your unit? Aragon has made a change - they replaced them with flame proof ones (sky blue). they will send them to you for free if you ask. You'll just have to buy some heat sink compound for the transistors.
Suggestion - borrow a synergistic reseach AC master coupler - for some reason it makes the biggest improvment on the Aragon amps.
