You can not count on the rest of the braid making good contact with that little portion ofthe braid you selected to solder to the ground lug.

You can do this IF you solder the braid in a ring, so that the litle portion you selected is in electrical contact with the rest of the braid via the solder joint.

This is not hard to do for an outer braid on a twisted pair, but could be difficult on a straight stock coax. Dividing the braid up into two or three sets of leads that are 1/2 to 1/3 of the total braid all twisted together, and then connecting them at different parts of the ground lug, or ground shell, can often make enoguh of a difference to avoid the worst of the problem.
