I didn't mean to sound confrontational. I have always wanted to say that my mileage varied, and this was my chance.
I defiantly agree with the bigger iron. The small irons tend to slow roast the jack before it gets hot enough to flow the solder.
It sounds crazy, but the 100 watt gun heats up the area to be soldered so quickly that it seems less likely to do harm than an underpowered iron in slow roast mode. Of course a larger iron or soldering station would be good alteratives as well. A big iron and get in and out quickly works for me on RCA's and power cord plugs and the like. I wouldn't use it on much else though.
