Hi Hollywood Steve!Good point about the gold plate being optional. I guess it depends on how humid your climate is. I've been some places where bare copper corroded with nothing more than a nasty look cast in it's general direction, so I tend to prefer gold plating, myself. However, if corrosion is not an issue, yes, a copper to copper join is preferable to a copper to gold to gold to copper join in my opinion.
Anyway, the use of spade lugs tightly screwed onto barrier strips is a form of construction that I prefer for some of my little projects, particularly loudspeaker crossovers. It's nice to be able to tweak the little buggers without having to desolder things....particularly if you mount them outside the enclosures until they're 'just right'.
