It gets more complicated now...I can use my unshielded IC between the DAC and gain box - no buzz, VERY quiet (the IC to amp from the box is shielded in this scenario). If I then go unshielded (same type IC) to the amp, I get the buzz. I had the same grounding problem you did initially, but I fixed that one early on - this reduced the magnitude of the buzz by an order of magnitude, but did not eliminate it. I also tried a shunt connected attenuator, 100k pot to ground, and a 10k resistor in series for the loading. This gave me a constant value buzz, instead of the varying buzz level with wiper rotation I get now. This is getting frustrating, as I've grown to hate the sound of copper interconnects after I got used to silver, and I don't know anyone that makes fully shielded silver (partial shielded IC's connected at only one end don't work).
