The most important thing is the Alps "pot" you used. For a passive attenuator, you should be using 10 KOhms, not 100 KOhms.The circuitry between the "pot" and the amp is HIGH impedance and vulnerable to hum pickup. When you advance the control fully, the "pot" and the I/P resistor in the amp are in parallel, forming a composite I/P resistor. That alters the circuits behavior.
Either you buy a 10 KOhm "pot" or you actively buffer the 100 KOhm "pot".
