(1) metal films picking up stray EMI by induction.(2) noisy switch contacts.
(3) improper switching attenuator grounding or missing a shield.
The attenuator is open frame, ceramic mil-spec type, so it doesn't have a shield. But it is with in the shielded case of the amp.
How likely is (1)? I could replace all the resistors is carbon, but are carbon resitors that much better in this regard. Perhaps it is the inductance of the 8cm of lead wire from the attenuator to the amp in combination with the resistors?
