I just built my first pair of DIY cables. Somewhat experimentally, I simply took two cables for each pair and connected the stripes and solids, eight of each, to make a single cable. Eight 24 ga. wires are about equal to 14 ga. Twelve pairs are about 13 gauge. As I recall, the 27 pair equivalent is 8 or 9 ga.I haven't calculated it, but I think 4 pairs of 24 ga. conductors would be a 16 ga. or smaller equivalent. Very few people think this is adequate, but 16 ga. zip cord is a common low-end speaker wire. It shouldn't hurt your equipment, but might compromise the performance. The single Cat5 cable should be better than 16 ga. zip, due to the twisted pairs of solid 24 ga. wire, as opposed to parallel runs of multi-strand.
