Re: Have you tried putting everything back to original state?

It is simply too much of a guessing game to try and really say what is up. I think it best instead to eliminate possibilities. I would encourage you to return everything back to normal and make sure no fuses are blown or breakers tripped. I would even go as far as to tell you to use a meter on both hot wires and make sure each reads 110 VAC to ground-metal box- AND to neutral-white wire. If indeed there was a "split circuit" then you may have created a direct short and blown a breaker which appears to reset but in fact is not! It is, on the other hand, very likely that the switches never worked right as many do not know how to correctly wire 3 and 4 way switches assuming that you do have such switches. A 3 way switch has 3 wires going to it and allows you to turn off/on a light from 2 locations. A 4 way switch has 4 wires and is added between two 3 way switches to allow one to turn on/off the light from as many additional locations as 4 way switches. In other words, two 3 ways and two 4 ways-all wired together to one light-lets you control the light from four different locations. Understand? As I said, best to return all to original state, measure voltages, and then test lights again. If all works great, if not look at the switches and see if you have 3 ways or 4 ways or what and how many of each. Also let us know if these switches control different lights or the same light. Also where these switches are located, i.e. in same box next to each other or in totally different locations throughout the house. Try some of these things and repost. I am sure that we can help you solve this if you can provide us with enough info but likely it will entail several experiments and posts!

Good luck,
Russ
