1. Check for high frquency oscillations (MHz range). this may be tough because probing may make them go away2. Check the devices data sheets. the lateral construction Hitachi 2sk1058/2sj162 are designed for a zero tempco at drain current of about 100mA. Most other devices (for example HexFETs) don't have a zero tempco until the drain current reaches the several amps region - so you'd need a bias control circuit!
