Sorry friend, but as a scientist I would disagree with your comments on the thermal conductivity of sand.
Sand has a very low thermal conductivity.
As an example, on a hot sunny day at the beach the sand on the top gets very hot - sometimes too hot to walk on. But it conducts very little heat to the ground below. Dig down just a couple of inches and its quite cool.
Now I'm a firm believer this tweak will work, but not at the expense of wiping out an expensive component. What we haven't decided on yet is whether these components naturally run hot.
