I do see your pic clearly. But the mod should be that you connect one end of the resistor to the signal source and the other end to the wipper.About the value of the shunt resistor, you better keep the "total" as 100K same as the original.
After you set the volume pot to your usual listening position, you measure the resistance from the wipper to the ground. Then the shunt resistor value is 100K minus the value you just measured.
