What I really meant was that solid lead is virtually non toxic because it is very hard to absorb into the body. Lead oxide is dangerous because it is generally quite easily absorbed.
I used to work for a large lead/acid battery mfr. We used to get blood tested for lead every 3 months. The white lead oxide powder in the casting plant was dangerous. OTOH You could carry around lead bars in your hands for 50 years with no ill effects.Cheers
