it sounds like you have already built what I am after. I've seen several types of variable caps on eBay that seem to offer enough voltage hadling, but they are not in the values I think I would need (too small a range, as you said). I believe the motor in the table I am awaiting only uses 20V (and I could experiment with less, even). At any rate, I guess I was hoping to get a variable cap whose median value was identical to the value of the cap in the stock ps. Then, I would tune by feel to get the smoothest operation, thereby being lazy and cheap and avoiding the need for the o-scope and lots of cap matching and switching. I think I'd worry about the low-voltage issue if using a variable resistor. Maybe I'll look into using an inductor, as you suggested. Thanks a lot for all the info.
