Re: Walt Jung super regulators

65.3.145.68

I found the Jung regulators reasonably easy to build, using the AD797
opamps, which appear to be completely stable in the original version
(1995 TAA issues).

I replaced the 7815/7915 regulators in my Hafler SE100 preamp, or
rather I isolated the line level and phono sections and ran them
off the Jung regulators, which are fed from the raw DC supply. I
might modify the original regulators to slightly up their voltage
and feed the Jung regulators from them. It was necessary to add
some local bypassing to the 7815/7915 regulators after the modification to cure some oscillation; you really need to check
your modifications before and after with an oscilloscope to be sure
everything's stable.

I also replaced the power supply rectifiers with Schottkys and
added RC snubbers to the rectifiiers and transformer secondary.
And I used Black Gate caps on the preamp board for local bypassing;
the main power supply caps were replaced with slightly larger
caps.

The sound? Well, lacking an unmodified unit to A/B against, I can
only say that I thought there was an improvement in the imaging.
I bought the SE100 because it was on sale, and it's an all-JFET
design.

With my oscilloscope cranked all the way up, I can just see some noise
on LT317 regulators; the Jungs are noiseless by comparison, so I assume any noise/ripple is down in the microvolt range. I've built
three sets of these regulators; one set is going into a bench supply, haven't decided what to do with the third.

I'd say the Jung regulators are probably the highest performing design out there, especially compared to three-terminal regulators.
If you build them into an application, be darn sure you wire them
carefully according to the construction article; less than optimum
grounding practice can compromise the noise performance.
