ALthough slate is a very good non resonant material, if the slate covers a raised (ie suspended) floor, the whole volume can still act as a sound box.
I would try blu-tak or similar.
A better option is to use Vibrapods or an equivalent.
These can have a very good effect under speakers.
I have them under 3 different sets of speakers and love the effect.
Beware that at first hearing the bottom end may sound thin. That's because they might take out a lot of extraneous resonance, leaving the lean deep bass that you want.
