After more than 3 decades in "the Business", I have never heard a console that did not massacre the sound passing through it. Yes, Neve and API sound "warmer" than SSL's 1/2 million dollar boom boxes.
However, they all sound terrible compared to sending your mic output "around" them instead.Especially for direct-to-2, why add miles of inferior cable, countless cheap op-amps and countless switches to the signal path? If you need to mix more than one mic per channel (another story), a passive mixer, which can be had for little $ will sound infinitely better.
I've never heard a recording made though ANY console that will sound as dynamically, harmonically and spatially convincing as one made without a console.
Your work would be much better served by investing in top notch monitoring (not what you see in studios) instead.
