Aluminum will have a more "open" sound and be a lot easier to punch holes in.......I would not use steel for another reason as I still have metal shards in my feet from the last steel chassis I built years ago as I normally don't wear shoes in my work room which is a converted bedroom! You normally can punch the holes and take the aluminum to an anodizer who for $25 or so can grain sand it and anodize it a nice natural or black.....Paint over steel just doesn't look as nice IMHO.......
