Fate of a mid-fi amp - What a nice cabinet ...

213.145.45.153

I have a Yamaha amplifier (SS of course), around 1980, in a very impressive cabinet... and that's the only good point of it. It sounds like a 14" TV (I mean it: a 21" TV sounds much better!). Transformer and heatsink seem like borrowed from a clock radio. Amp schematic is: Single NPN differential - Driver - 2-stage Complementary bipolar follower.

I need to convert it into something decent for a kitchen system, 15Wpc will do. Here are three paths:

- all-new simple SS power amp, 50Wpc something, with input switch/volume. Even this will require new transformer, heatsinks, etc.

- a small EL84 or 6V6 power amp, add OPTs to the bill. Anything larger than EL84 or 6V6 won't fit into cabinet profile and I'm afraid can melt it too.

- Retain original PCB, power transistors and heatsinks as is. Replace-upgrade all power supply, remove tone controls and preamp, and tweak the existing amp schematic until ... until what?

Costs and time are an issue. I have suitable power transformers for both SS and tube options, a few chokes, tubes, sockets, most of the small parts necessary, test instruments. Which leaves out: OPT or power transformers, PS capacitors.

Which way would you go? I know many folks hate the very word 'transistor' but it's for background only, and setup time is important.
