The resistor should go between the positive supply and the positive terminal on the diode. Take the negative diode lead down to earth.
To work out the value take the diode forward voltage from the supply voltage and divide by the diode current.
The forward voltage should be between 2-3v although 12v and 24v types are available and the current drawn is usually about 20mA. Both values vary slightly with colour of diode. Blue diodes are usally higher voltage compared to their red, yellow and green counterparts.
Therefore if using a 2v diode you get a value of about 1.6k....use the next nearest value above this which would be 1.8k to allow for valiations in voltage.
If using 12v you get about 1.2k ...again I would use 1.5k to be on the safe side.
Although some people will say that they can hear diodes or displays affecting sound quality your are unlikely to notice a difference.
