You could wire this led either way. The only difference would be the series resistor would have to be twice as large when running the cathode (-) end to the -36v line as opposed to ground. The total voltage supply would then be 72 volts. 72/.020=3.6k ohm where aa the 36 volt supply would then be 36/.020=1.8k ohms. I find 20ma to be too bright so i shoot for 5ma. 72/.005=14.4k 15k would be close enough and will provide 4.8ma. 36/.005=7.2k, 7.5k would give you 4.8ma.Sparky
