Magnetic levitation is a great idea. The only problem is it will probably cost about $100,000 to levitate something the size and weight of a phono cartridge. There is a commercially available "magnetic levitation" platform on the market which utilizes disk shaped magnets. If you look closely, you'll see some vertical posts which supposedly keep the platform from "falling" sideways off the magnets. The platform will always be in contact with at least one of these vertical posts. These same vertical posts are what will conduct all floor vibrations into the "floating" platform, defeating the "benefits" of levitation.
Earnshaw's theorem (dating from the year 1839 if I'm correct) states levitation is impossible using permanent magnets. It IS possible using diamagnets but as I stated at the top of this message, the cost skyrockets away from the practical.
If anyone has proven Earnshaw wrong, I'd be very interested in hearing about it.
Happy Listening!
