Re: Best deal on Dremel? And is a Dremel the right tool I should be looking for?

A Dremel is one of those tools that you'll wonder how you ever did withot. Dremel seems to control the price fairly well and I've not seen too many deals on them. Sam's Club often has a kit with a flexible shaft (good to have) a case and a good assortment of bits for a pretty reasonable price. Also Sear's better units are re-badged Dremels as well.

If you happened to know a machinist or mechanic, an even better tool to use is an electric or air-powered die grinder. These are similar to a Dremel but have more power and can take a larger diameter bit which will cut faster. I wouldn't recommend that you buy one of these, but if you could borrow the use of one, that would be good. I actually used an air-powered die grinder to do my prototype.

The router unit is not really suited to cutting speaker holes in MDF. The largest bit you can get is 1/4 inch and the motor really doesn't have the horses to cut all day in MDF. For cutting speaker openings you really need a real router and a circle jig. The best one is made by jasper (http:www.jasper.com) and requires a plunge router to go with it. I have one and there's no better way to do spekaer openings IMHO.

If you get the Dremel, don't forget to Practice a few cuts in scrap metal before you attempt to cut that enclosure. The small diameter bit wants to catch in the opening and then "dance" out of the hole if you're not careful. Take it slowly.

Regards
Bill
