My recent experience building an op-amp based low-pass XO backs up what you said. I'm running a regulated split 10V supply with 20,000uF of filtering. In very close proximity to the op-amp I have 10uF of poly bypass caps. Is the bass good? Yes. Is it extended? Yes! Good dynamic range? U-betcha!
