After reading an article on the Ariel recently from which I have copied some of the crossover design....the author recommends using the best quality polyprops such as Hovland etc.
I would tend to agree with this as I have got similar results to yourself in my own crossover experiments using cheaper polyprops.
I do intend to upgrade as and when money permits....regards
