Thanks for the replies. I appreciate it. I did not know the sub-chassis was made with damped layers as some have pointed out. Mine is painted black so I can't see how it was made, but from viewing the pictures of the unpainted models on the Internet, the sub-chassis appears to be solid aluminum. If mine is made with layers, then I really shouldn't make any change to it, although the purpose of my planned mod is to increase the mechanical rigidity of the sub-chassis but not acoustic damping, thus the added piece is so skeletal. I love my Mark IV and I respect Oracle's reputation, but I think the design of MARK IV has two issues that may affect its structural integrity. The first is that the sub-chassis is too thin, only 1/2", which may result in a membrane-like behavior, resembling drum surface. Starting in Mark VI, the thickness of sub-chassis has increased to 3/4", which happened to be coincident to my thought. The second issue is the plastic disc that clamps the main bearing housing to the sub-chassis through three screws. Assuming bearing housing should be rigidly attached to sub-chassis, then the disc is both too soft in material and too thin in dimension—the three screws sunk deeply into the 1/4"-thick disc from above—to hold the bearing housing and the weight of the platter it supports. I haven't hear any mention of change to this part in later models. Nevertheless I already did some modification to this, but how much my mod actually improved the sound I don't know, because I did this mod right after I bought the MARK IV (used, of course), but it certainly made me feel better. :) Once again, thank you all for your invaluable feedback.
