If the shield is touching either RCA plug you have effectively grounded the shield at whatever component that particular RCA is plugged into, though it is a very poor connection. This may cause a ground hum due to the electrical potential difference of the two IC's. You didn't specify if you grounded the shield of each cable to one of the RCA's, but if you did make sure that the shield grounded RCA's are both plugged into the same component. I'm not sure what will happen if you plugged a shield-grounded RCA into different components but it is definitely NOT recommended by anyone. If the drain wires are not soldered to anything or touching any part of the RCA's, then they are probably not the culpricts. Hope this helps.
