Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

Well, the day started out great.
I just got my vintage Sansui 3030bc turntable a new cartridge (signet MR 5.0me), which made a world of difference sonically. Then I decided to upgrade the interconnects on the turntable too. Unfortunately this "upgrade" made a word of difference, but in the negative sense.
I now can hear a hum while the unit is working, and when the TT power is turned off. It sounds like a 60Hz ground hum to me. Also power switch pops when it's turned on or off.I really am puzzled by this because I soldered the new IC's exactly like the old ones. Didn't change a thing internally. The original right channel interconnect had the ground wire soldered to the outer shield of the connector plug. I wasn't able to duplicate that on the new IC's though. Instead I terminated the ground wire with a spade connector. The hum is the same when the ground is on my amp's "ground post" and when the ground spade touches the outer shield of the right channel IC connector.
The connections I made inside were all point to point with 4% silver solder. I made 4 connections in all between the tonearm leads (red, green, white, and blue) and the stripped ends of my interconnect wires.
The interconnect wire I used contained two insulated 22ga wires and a "drain-wire,"(that is suppose to be connected to only 1 side of the interconnect)and foil shielding.
I did not hook up the drain wire on either end of the IC's.
I tried reversing the power plug in the outlet, switching amps, and swithing outlets with no results. The new cartridge still sounds great, but not combined with all the humming!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
