Hi Craig,I am not an expert on this issue, but here goes....
I have read (I believe somewhere in the asylum) of a non oversampling modification to CD players that have a separate oversampling digital filter/oversampling chip. The mod consists of simply bypassing the digital signal from the input of this chip to its output and severing relevant PCB tracks from the chip to the next stage (D/A converters). There were also some other connections to be bypassed, but I cant recall (maybe the original poster can help If he reads this It may have been the bit and word clocks and relevant grounds???). It seemed to be a reasonably straight forward mod, but would only apply to certain CD players- CD players with multibit DACS with sepearte digital filter/oversampling chips. There were many 18 bit(or more?) 8x oversampling cd players that could be good candidates (Two that come to mind are the Luxman d103u & d107u- very nice particularly if you like valve output stages. The d107u also employs a transformer coupled output which would be helpful to filter out some of those high frequency nasties) these players are rare now, but excellent sonically.
I am sure there are other good candidates. With the mod and a bit of careful design it might be possible to switch the signal to either go through the digital filter/oversampling chip or bypass it- then you could do quick A/B comparisons (careful switching the signal though- I am not sure about the transients that the switching might introduce into the data stream during switching- this may damage some surrounding components- some advice from digital electronics gurus would be useful here??)
Anyway atleast I have given you some food for thought.
