If it is a reactive transformer it can reduce variations in mains voltage. In a heavy surge plant - yes they are useful. I met them in a steelworks with arc melting furnaces. I can't think of a more demanding load.
I aquired one for a friend who ran an IT business in the country [on a farm]. Yes it reduced the number of mains "brown outs" but they dissipate 100s of watts...
I see you are in Oz. I have no experience of your supply. At present I live in the steel belt of the UK. As the factories close, our supply becomes better and better! Just to put this in to perspective, in the last 2 years I know of 2 steelworks that have each closed 1 arc melting furnace. These are about 50 Mw each! If you add in the plant equipment associated, you see why we have a fairly constant supply...cheers
