Any utechtic (63/37). It doesn't have a "plastic state". As a result it solidifies rapidly. An example is water, it freezes or doesn't, no in between. Alpha Metals makes some that costs less than Kester 60/40 and produces a better/shinier joint. I get mine at Fry's Electronics. Not all of them carry it though.Personally, I haven't seen a difference between multi-core and single, the flux melts into the work just the same. But that's just me, to each his/her own.
Also, if you use an iron tip soldering iron, try one of those stainless steel scratch pads from a supermarket. Just put it in a small can and poke the tip in it a few times to clean it. Don't drag it unless you want hot solder flipping all over the place. Hacko has sold the same things for their irons for years. A spounge and water will damage the iron tip much faster, as in rust.
