Yeah, doesn't sound specifically like a ground problem. As mentioned, that's definitely a hummm sound. But could possibly be due to RFI. Try shorting out your CD preamp inputs, then turning the volume up. If still a hiss, not the CDP. If no hiss, then CDP related; ask again. If a hiss, disconnect pre from amp and short out amp inputs. This'll let you know if the hiss is from the pre or amp. Shorting out all unused pre inputs is a good idea for most preamps. If you determine the amp isn't the cause, and you have all pre inputs shorted out, then the noise is inherent in the pre. Many preamps will have a tiny hiss at max volume, but it goes completely away when the volume is turned down very slightly - I wouldn't worry if that's your case.
