Concerning the Auricap (website) comparisons:They shure do look impressive. The main points are: Extremely low losses with very low variability, besides less dissipation.
However there are other issues in cap sound, that don't show up in these measurements, specifically microfony, which may be a real source of problems (too). The charge transfer is linked to vibrational (static) forces, these vibrations might leave a sonic trace on the signal. That trace, however small it might be, could be subjectively more nocuous than a constant resistive loss. It seems to me, that the oil could damp vibrations within the layers, helped by the acoustically absorptive nature of the paper impregnation (however bad the dielectrical properties of paper are compared to the better plastics). Increased microfony will show up as losses too, but i'm not shure how well the loss factors really correlate with microfony (and the real sonics of caps).
There is another issue that was raised in a discussion with a manufacturer. His information sources in the business sayed, that paper in oil caps 'go off', supposedly by loosing (vaporizing) the oil. Does anybody know about that? How long do they guarantee the values? Maybe its a problem of some manufacturers and not others.
I think if this would happen, that the problems would be so big that then i even wan't have to express excuses for using 18 dB crossovers, because the s.-load is big enough even with 6 dB-crossovers.Any information would be appreciated and important IMO.
