Hi, I have the Weller WES50 and thinks it's fine. Normally I have it set at 600 (F), if I am doing stuff like stripping varnish off wires (yek) I set it at 800.The iron has to be hotter than the wire in order to transfer heat to it... I don't know anything about crystalline structure of copper, but in general overheating things just means that you ain't doing it right :-) In fact a hotter iron can be better, it heats up the local area faster than heat transfers into the rest of the component.
