The "golf ball" platform may be inexpensive, even effective, but cannot move freely in the pitch and roll rotational directions and cannot move in the vertical direction, either. Certainly not a great many degrees of freedom - lateral plane and yaw (twist) rotational directions could be quite good with the golf balls, though, somewhat similar in concept to roller bearings/thrust plates.
