About 10 years ago I was going to buy a VTL preamp. I was surprised to see a "cheap" carbon pot in the unit. I talked to Manley and he said they sounded better than the plasic pots. You could buy the same thing at Radio Shack, at the time, for about $1.95 (stereo unit).
I have just changed out my alps pot for a Dact mono (two). They are fantastic but you pay a price, literally.
