Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

I was at Costco the other day and they had a bamboo cutting board that was 15x22, slightly larger than the Ikea version. It was tight, but it would hold my turntable + outboard motor, and it was cheap ($30), so I bought it to try.
I've being using an IKEA maple board with vertical grain (the surface looks like a bunch of short squares glued together). The sound was fairly balanced and after I recently added a Hi-Fi Tuning fuse (gold) to my preamp, I thought everything was right except that I could use some deeper bass for impact. (Thus, some thoughts about upgrading to bigger speakers.)
The first impression was that I got a lot of, and clear, coherent bass. But it was to a point where it was overwhelming the room a bit. Too much of a good thing? I could hear the "pressure" on some lower end notes. But it definitely squeezed every last ounce of bass from my ported Verity Parsifal Encores which only goes down to 28dB or so.
With this, I thought the treble and midrange became a bit muddied. So I've played with the cartridge loading a little bit as well as adjusting the tracking angle to compensate. It helped. But will need to continue to try to see if I can get it improved. I really like what it does to the bass, but it may require that I pull my speakers further away from walls to balance it out.
I just did a search online and read Roy Gregory's post on bamboo boards to see whether I am hearing it right. Well, I guess he had better results than I do. Will report further after doing some adjustments over the holidays.
