Agreed. The ear is most reliable after developing a long-term conditioning of a certain quality of sound against which to compare the full difference of change. We know what's happening when reversing out of a Safeway parking lot next to another car that's stationary because we retain a grip on the absolute. But when the neighboring car moves in as we reverse out, disorientation ensues. A/B switching is like two cars moving and leaves the brain grasping unreliably at shocking impressions rather than the overall differences in my view.
