The acid etched surfaces of the newer generation of caps is quite different from the original and traditional flat foil used. IIRC capacitors were originally parallel metal sheets which later became foil. While more surface area will create more capacitance, the peaks and valleys created by etching the foil, IMHO, changes the voltage which can arc between the so called parallel plates.
IMHE the older parallel plate designs have better bass but you pay the penalty in their increased size.
Just my opinion of course, no research to back it up except by hands on experience
