Jacob George,

The designer of the Rethm speakers, uses a cone shaped adapter over the rear of the magnets of the lowther's he uses. His theory is that you need to move the air moving backwards from the drivers as fast as possible, because the back pressure can impair the forward movement of the cone.

He makes a cone sort of reminiscent of the tail piece of a jet engine.
Of course it does take a lot of depth of speaker cabinet. I own a pair of Rethms and I found the idea intriguing. Lowthers ( I have the DX4 {?}) have a displacement of only +/- 1 mm so you would hardly expect any difference ( although they are very high efficiency). Indeed there was a sonic difference. With the cone sound was smoother more detailed.

It sometimes galls me when I look at automotive drivers. Many of the larger woofers have very aerodynamically, finned shaped basket assemblies, They obviously were designed to pass the air flow backwards as fast as possible.

YMMV and FWIW
