Because in a transformer induced voltage is proportional to the
total "flux-linkage" and the frequency. Higher frequencies (like 60hz), require a smaller cross-sectional area in the core,...the smaller the core the shorter the length of the coils.
You can easily see where using 50hz on a "made for" 60hz transformer would pose potential issues with its efficiency and also safety...
