IIRC, the cave came to be found because they were pumping out a nearby mine. When mining operations stop, so will the pumps and the cave will be filled up again from ground water seepage, meaning that the crystals may continue to grow!Extremely large gypsum formations were also found close to the surface in the US: Somewhere in the Badlands area, IIRC, by some cowboy. A noted mineralogist bought the property and excavated the site uncovering crystals as large as 5 tons, IIRC. Many of those samples are in US museum
I have a sample of a lead based crystal quarried from a coal mine in Eastern Europe. Apparently the mine had been on fire for the past decade, and the fire was only recently extinguished. It had the most freaky formations I have ever seen: like something from the movie Aliens. The crystals formed long molten spikes probably blown by the wind of the flames and then solidified. Its fascinating what nature can form.
StuPS. The large crystals in the US were in the Wasatch range.
