You can also determine the orientation by the way it polarizes light....Incidentally, heating amethyst to 450 C will turn it clear, heating to 450 C will turn it into citrine. Your reference also mentions that UV will change its color: very interesting. I believe the mechanism is that the photons will change the electron configuration and hence the color.
I dislike the idea, but the more investigating made the more the effects seems to equate with quantum physics. Yikes!~
